Bent Out of Shape: Canadian Industrial Design 1945 – Present
July 16th – October 10, 2010
$10 Adult, $8 Student/Senior, Free for DX members
Bent Out of Shape celebrates the Design Exchange’s rich industrial design collection dating from 1945 to the present. The exhibition showcases the permanent collection through the lens of material, method, technology, identity and transformation. In doing so Bent Out of Shape will illustrate rapid political, technological, and social changes which burst forth following WWII and moving toward modernity.


Design Domestic

July 5 – August 19, 2010
Free admission
Design Domestic is a photographic-based exhibit featuring nine Canadian designers/artists in their homes. The photographs will be exhibited alongside a personal artifact, on loan to the DX by each of the designers/artists. An Te Liu, Andrew Jones, Anne Cormier, Claude Cormier, Jason MacIsaac, Martin Kohn, Micah Lexier, Renee Daoust and Shaun Moore all to be featured.


DX Shop

The Design Exchange Shop is now open to shop till you drop. We feature over 30 recognized designers from all over Canada! Support national design while finding the perfect gift, souvenir or piece to take home. Opening to be held on July 15th at 5:30p.m.

Call for Submissions: 2010 Design Exchange Awards
The Design Exchange Awards (DXA’s) promote Canadian design excellence and recognizes the critical role of design in all types of organizations including commercial entities (large and small businesses), not-for-profit organizations, and the public sector. The awards celebrate the success stories achieved through close partnerships between clients and designers. The DXAs are Canada’s only award program to judge design by results, balancing function, aesthetics, and economic success.

Hylozoic Ground

Canada's entry to the 12th International Architecture Exhibition for the Venice Biennale is a technological masterpiece and a fabulous representation of Canadian talent. Hylozoic Ground, a sculptural architecture installation gives new meaning to the term 'interactive'. We encourage you to “take in” the video: here.


Financial District Tours

In Focus

Brothers Dressler

Jason and Lars Dressler are twin woodworkers building furniture and other objects with a respect for material, process and craftsmanship. By focusing on creating at a craft level. They design and produce custom furniture and batch production work from their woodshop in Toronto, Canada.

In creating their numbers series, limited editions, one of a kind objects and made to order commission work Jason and Lars strive to maintain a small footprint in the way they consume and the purpose to which they build. Their pieces are composed of long-lasting individual components so that they can easily be disassembled into their component parts and either re-used or recycled at the end their using lifecycles.

You will see their work showcased at the DX during our upcoming exhibition Bent Out of Shape.

Special Events

Trading Floor: Housed in the former Toronto Stock Exchange building, the Design Exchange is known for hosting lavish private functions, such as elegant wedding receptions and memorable Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. A multi-million dollar restoration has returned the Trading Floor to its 1937 art deco splendor. The elegant INCO Grand Staircase presents the perfect opportunity for pictures as you are directed to the breathtaking 40-foot-high ceiling environment. The beautiful Trading Floor, featuring eight murals by renowned artist Charles Comfort, is the perfect setting for parties of 100 to 500 people.

Reception Areas: The Chalmers Design Centre in the main floor lobby and the Exhibit Hall on the third floor are the ideal spaces for your pre-event cocktail party to welcome your guests. Please be advised that current exhibits on either of the floors cannot be moved or altered for use during any kind of function.

Heritage Fee: Opening on March 30th 1937, the Toronto Stock Exchange was a masterful expression of its time; today it stands as one of Canada’s foremost Art Deco landmarks. The Design Exchange receives no operating grants from any level of government - municipal, provincial or federal. Thus, the Heritage Fee helps to support and preserve the maintenance of our historical venue.

Felt Making Basics
Thursday July 8th, 15th and 22nd
Location: 401 Richmond Street West, Suite 109
6:00-930 pm

Cost $105.00 Materials $25

This introduction to felt making skills will teach you how to make a flat sheet of felt using wet felting techniques. Students will explore how to add colour and motif through inlaying fabric and other pieces of felt. Students will also learn some fun and easy 3-d felt forming through making balls, ropes and pockets.

Michael Totzke, Editor of Canadian Interiors magazine named Editor of the Year by the Professional Writers Association of Canada.
The award recognizes his outstanding editorial work during the 2009 calendar year.

Pet Peeve

The developer thinks they’re a designer!

It’s bad enough when developers seem to simply refuse to see the designer’s point of view, but that difference of opinion can usually be mediated (usually by a good project manager). However, when the developer thinks they know more about design than the designer, tempers can flare.
