MIE Task Force on Design Education

Based on the recommendation at the Faculty Retreat in December 2009, a Task Force on Design Education has been established with the mandate to examine how to improve design education in MIE. In particular, the Task Force will recommend how to implement a 4th-year capstone design course for the ME program. The committee consists of the following members:

Jane Postma (Chair)
Jim Wallace
Bill Cleghorn
Jim Mills
Hani Naguib
Jason Bazylak

The first meeting took place on June 29 that reviewed the practices in other universities and a proposal by Prof. Bill Cleghorn and Prof. Jim Mills.

James Dyson Award – MIE entry

The mission of the James Dyson Award is to encourage the future generations of innovative design engineers through a broad challenge to "design something that solves a problem."

Samuel Malamed, a current MIE graduate student, has taken up this challenge by developing what was initially a course project, into a fully functioning prototype. His design is an improvement upon an old technology that has recently come back into fashion due to environmental concerns: the rain barrel.

It is a great example of what can happen when our solid UofT engineering education is combined with drive and ambition.

Samuel's design has entered the competition and can be viewed online here.

You are encouraged to take a look at Samuel's design and if you like what you see to vote on for it.
