Cross-Cultural Capstone Design » Visit by Peking University, Beijing

From Friday March 18 to Monday, March 21 MIE was visited by a group from the College of Engineering at Peking University, Beijing to inaugurate the collaborative running of the Capstone design project courses (MIE 490 and 491) for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The group from Peking University consisted of eleven fourth year engineering students who are currently taking their capstone design course, three of their teaching assistants and the professor responsible for the international capstone design courses at Peking University, Prof. P. Han.

The College of Engineering has established collaboratrive courses with Stanford University and the National University of Singapore; MIE will be the sole collaborator in Canada. The emphasis of the projects will be "cross cultural" in that the projects involve problems that are applicable to Asia and the West.

The proposed collaborative projects for the next academic year are again for international companies. The Peking University students presented these and other current topics at a symposium on Saturday, March 19 in MC 102. The event was attended by MIE faculty, third-year students and graduate students. During their visit the Peking University students visted Niagara Falls and had a tour of the sites of Toronto escorted by third-year MIE students.

Student Affairs
Operations Research Challenge

On Saturday, March 19, 37 high school students participated in the first annual Operations Research Challenge, a one-day contest organized by Prof. Chris Beck's TIDEL group (Maher Alhossaini, Maliheh Aramon Bajestani, T.K. Feng, Christian Muise, Daria Terekhov, Tony Tran). Teams of three and four students had to solve problems that ranged from choosing the best lineup for the Toronto Maple Leafs to figuring out a schedule of rides at Disneyland. The competition was followed by a 30-minute "Introduction to Operations Research" lecture by Prof. Timothy Chan, a discussion of the solutions and an awards ceremony. The event was supervised by nine graduate students: Maliheh Aramon Bajestani; T.K. Feng; Corey Kiassat; Jason Lee; William Luff; Tian Mu Liu; Christian Muise (computer science); Johnny Tam; Daria Terekhov; and Tony Tran.

All teams did very well, and feedback indicates that the students had fun and would like to participate in this kind of event again!
