Re: Appointment of New Principal St. Michael’s College

I am pleased to announce that the Collegium, at its meeting of March 30, 2011, passed a unanimous motion to appoint Professor Domenico Pietropaolo as Principal of St. Michael’s College for a five – year term, effective July 1, 2011.

Professor Pietropaolo’s name was recommended by the Review and Search Committee for the Office of Principal after four months of discussion and deliberations which included an extensive report on the Office by our current Principal Mark McGowan.

Professor Pietropaolo received his first degree, a Bachelor of Science from St. Michael’s College (U of T), an MA and a PhD from the University of Toronto. He is the current holder of the Goggio Chair in Italian Studies, Professor of Italian Studies and Drama and Chair of the Department of Italian Studies. A long time Fellow of St. Michael’s College, he holds cross appointments to the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, the Centre for Comparative Literature, and the Centre for Medieval Studies. He is past President of the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies as well he is a current member of the Editorial Board of Spunti e ricerche, and the Editorial Board of Moderna. He has published widely and lectured internationally in both English and Italian. He currently has two books in progress – Il dialetto di Maierato. A study of living and historical maieratese in southern Calabria and Aracangelo Spagna’s Poetics of the Oratorio Libretto: Edition Translation and Commentary. He is also responsible for the stage script, translation and adaptation for Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, which was produced by the Shaw Festival at Niagara on the Lake and in several other venues. In recognition of his many achievements and contributions was awarded the Order of the Republic of Italy with the rank of Commendatore (Knight Commander) in the order Stella della Solidarietà.

I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Professor Pietropaolo and to express my gratitude and the gratitude of the Collegium to him for accepting this important appointment. My thanks also goes to the other candidates who considered serving the College in role of Principal.
I am sure that you will share my confidence and enthusiasm in welcoming Professor Pietropaolo to the Office of Principal. We, at St Michael’s look forward to working with you and we assure you of our co‐operation and support in your new role and responsibilities.
