Chair's Office
AMIGAS Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 3, AMIGAS hosted the second annual Chinese New Year party for the department. More than 100 graduate students, faculty and staff attended. Everyone enjoyed delicious Chinese food and treats, celebrating the new "Year of the Rabbit".

Closures for Moving » New Student Service Centre

A reminder that this week, offices in Rosebrugh building and within the main administrative office will be closing or temporarily suspending service, in order to facilitate their move to the new Student Services Centre.

Offices are reminded to post notice of closure:

• The Undergraduate Office will be closed on Friday, February 4 and Monday, February 7.
• External Relations and Communications (RS212A) will be closed on Tuesday, February 8.
• Graduate Office will be closed Thursday, February 10 and Friday, February 11.


If staff or department members have any questions, please contact Joe Baptista.


Awards & Recognition
Prof. Sun » Innovation Award from University of Toronto Connaught Fund



Founded in 1972, the Connaught Fund was created from the sale of Connaught Laboratories, which first mass-produced insulin, the Nobel award-winning discovery of U of T Professors Frederick Banting and Charles Best.

Ten scholars received between $30,000 and $80,000 each from the Connaught Innovation Award, which helps accelerate the development of promising technology and promote commercialization and knowledge transfer. Prof. Yu Sun was awarded for his "automated adherent cell micoinjection."

IndE students place 3rd in case study competition at IIE Conference



Congratulations to Industrial Engineering students Anna Sheu, Rui (Karen) Sun, Ting (David) Han, Jun (Joey) Zeng who tied for 3rd place in the case study competition at the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) student conference, held January 13 - 16 in Montreal.

This year, 28 students from UofT attended the IIE, over only 6 students the year before.

MIE Alumus Kamal Shah profiled in Globe and Mail

Kamal Shah's (MechE 8T9, MASc 9T2) business Fotobabble, based in Silicon Valley, allows users to record their own audio to narrate photos. Fotobabble is now in use by big media companies such as NBC, and has being touted by Wired magazine and the Los Angeles Times.

Research Activities
NSERC » Undergraduate Summer Research Awards



The 2011 NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards are available to our undergraduate students. Students granted these awards have an opportunity to assist supervisors with their research. Undergraduate students will be informed shortly of these awards, and will be instructed to speak with professors to discuss the possibility of employment during the summer of 2011.

Deadline to apply: Monday, February 28.

New MIE Online Clearance Form for Graduating Students

The department has developed a web based system to replace the manual clearance form previously used by graduate students.

Graduate students were required to have a clearance form signed by several MIE groups to confirm that they do not have any outstanding item/accounts when they graduate or leave the department:
• Purchasing
• Machine shop
• Computing
• Thesis On-Loan (Graduate office)
• Financial services (Accounting)
• Faculty supervisor

Director, Centre for Research in Healthcare Engineering (CRHE)

Working collaboratively with the Academic Director, the Director leads the operation and development of the CRHE. As a senior manager the Director contributes to the development of CRHE strategic priorities, objectives, and to the financial management and budget process. The Director is the solutions architect responsible for the provision and oversight of high quality project management, and for using the application of industrial engineering tools such as process design, optimization, modelling, simulation, and information systems enablers.

Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate degree in Math, Business (MBA), Health Administration or a related discipline is preferred.
