RE: Staff Announcement - University Relations

It is with mixed feelings that I write to inform you that Tim McTiernan, Assistant Vice-President, Government, Institutional and Community Relations, will be leaving the University to become the President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology effective July 1, 2011.

Tim joined the University of Toronto in June, 2006 as Assistant Vice-President, Research and Executive Director of The Innovations Group, where he was responsible for furthering U of T's technology transfer and commercialization efforts. In that capacity, he worked on increasing the number of research invention disclosures at the University and in securing additional funding for the commercialization of U of T-developed projects. Tim also represented the University very effectively in the collaborative effort to establish MaRS Innovation.

Tim has held the role of Assistant Vice-President, Government, Institutional and Community Relations since November 1, 2009 and has been instrumental in building and maintaining positive and constructive relationships with government, other public sector institutions, the private sector and community partners. He has been an invaluable asset to the University in the development of many advocacy strategies, including successful funding submissions and infrastructure projects.

"Tim has been a tremendous asset to the University of Toronto and we're going to miss his intellect, his humour and his vast knowledge and expertise," said UofT President David Naylor. "But this is a wonderful opportunity for him and we wish him all the best with this new challenge."

On behalf of University Relations and on a personal note, Tim has been a wonderfully supportive colleague and a true leader. I know you will join me in thanking him for his contribution to the University of Toronto and congratulating him on his new appointment. We wish him every success and look forward to working with him in his new role.

Tim will continue in his current position through the end of May 2011 and, in the coming months, we will have an opportunity to personally thank him and wish him well in his future exciting role.
