Design Exchange Express October 2010

Design Exchange Express October 2010

Dear Members and Friends,

For the last two years, the DX has suffered the effects of the recession. We have worked very hard to trim budgets to maintain quality programming, especially in light of reduced sponsorship dollars from our corporate partners. The DX staff are very dedicated and we have worked to develop new partners and in-kind sponsors to help offset the decline in funding.

How can you help? Please buy tickets to our annual fundraising gala. This year, we are honouring the great Canadian Designer - Bruce Mau and we have planned a tremendous event for you! Our special event partners, such as our caterers, AV company and suppliers donate their products and services to our gala to make it a top event in Toronto. Our team at the DX works night and day to create an event that is unique, fun and memorable! The evening will be full of surprises and each ticket stub is eligible to win the door prize of a trip to 2 to Egypt, courtesy of TourCan Vacations.

Everyone deserves a BIG night out! If you are a leader in your company, consider buying 10 tickets to THE BIG PARTY to give to staff or suppliers. If you have great clients, consider buying a table at the VIP dinner to host your guests. If you love a good time, group together some friends and buy 10 tickets to be eligible for the discount! Great food, open bar, stellar entertainment and the best networking for the design industry in Canada. At this DX event, black tie is not required. Dress up, dress down - but dress to impress! Celebrate the absolute best of Canadian design.

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010. This is the year, I want to see YOU here.

Sam

The Daniels/ DX FORA are the first public events to be co-sponsored by the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design and the Design Exchange. The FORA will be a series of moderated debates focusing on the ideas and new practices that are today transforming the agency of design and designers in various international arenas. Poised at the intersection of Architecture, Media, Science, Politics and Urbanism – the FORA will explore the competing purviews of, and interplay between various design disciplines. We are opening the FORA series with “The Ends of Design,” in which two Toronto luminaries – Bruce Mau and Bruce Kuwabara – will explore where the art, craft and culture of design begins, and ends. The event will be moderated by Richard Sommer, Dean of U of T’s Daniels Faculty. Information on the second FORA “Breaking the Surface” and others subsequent events will be forthcoming.

Reports that Canada lags behind other countries in productivity that offer no viable solutions! Every week, there seems to be a new report developed by Universities, Think Tanks, Banks and Government departments that indicate that Canada lags behind in productivity due to underinvestment in innovative sectors, such as advanced machinery, equipment and communications technology. All of these reports fail to mention DESIGN. Even our federal government's INNOVATION policy fails to mention DESIGN. However, we know, that DESIGN is a critical factor in INNOVATION. Furthermore, designers are educated to think (wide, deep, lateral) and OUTSIDE THE BOX. Creative thinking is key to innovation.

So what are we going to do about it? At the DX, there are programs that we want to offer, but lack the funding to develop and market toward businesses. We have great models, such as the ones created by the Korean Design Centre that match designers (Industrial and Graphic) to manufacturers - that have helped speed products to market at a record rate! If you are adamant that we educate businesses and our government about the importance of design, send me an email at sam@dx.org. I need your help vocalizing this to key leaders that can help us achieve more for our country.

DX VOLUNTEERS

Peter has been nominated as our volunteer of the month for October! We are happy to announce this as he is a keen, hardworking, dependable, humorous and highly creative volunteer! He has been invaluable to the DX as we have relied heavily on him for our annual fundraising gala tasks!

Peter is a U of T student concluding his 4th year in urban studies, after which he intends to pursue a Masters of Architecture in New York. His favorite figures of the design world include (but are not limited to) Norman Foster, Philippe Starck, Karim Rashid, Takashi Murakami, and Marc Jacobs. Peter’s interests include cycling, playing the piano, travelling, reading, growing vegetables, and spelunking. He vehemently loathes avocados and idling automobiles. If in-successful in his current career aspirations, Peter plans on moving to Saskatchewan to become a farmer.
