MIE Building Banner

On the night of October 5, the department banner was installed on the Mechanical Building. Joe Baptista worked into the night, overseeing the installation from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. Thank you, Joe!

The banner was inspired by the contest winning design by Heyse Li (MIE 1T0 + PEY).

Designs were evaluated by the banner committee members comprised of Prof. Dionne Aleman, Prof. Goldie Nejat, Prof. Jean Zu, Jason Bazylak, Joe Baptista, Kate Brand, Raj Grainger, Shannon Osborne, and Anna Vanek. Thank you to the committee for their time and effort. Thanks also to Profs. Aimy Bazylak and Chi-Guhn Lee, who offered their input during the final design stages and Nina Haikara for coordinating final meetings between the committee and Engineering Strategic Communications.

Special thanks to the Shilpa Gantotti, manager of marketing & communications, and digital media & graphic design specialists, Raj Grainger and Luke Pauw of Engineering Strategic Communications, for all their hard work in finalizing the design.

Formula SAE Team 2010 in Germany.

This past August the University of Toronto Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) racing team participated at the Formula Student Germany (FSG) competition held in Hockenheimring, Germany.

FSG is among the strongest FSAE competitions in the world. The UofT team ranked 11th in the design category and student driver Mark Prelich pushed the vehicle to its limits, finishing in 5th place in the skidpad test. UofT FSAE plans to compete again in Germany next year.

On September 18, the team hosted their 9th Annual Shootout at the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario. Norris McDonald of the Toronto Star covered the event.

UofT FSAE also appeared as an exhibitor at Canadian Manufacturing Week October 5 - 7 at the Toronto Congress Centre.

UTFIRST Mentors » Experience the Joy of UTFIRST!

The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering will be continuing its mentorship program this year to help high schools in the Greater Toronto Area participate in this year's FIRST Robotics competition. This highly successful annual event has been running for 19 years, and over 100,000 high school students have participated from across North America. In this competition, teams of high school students, sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers, design, assemble, and test a robot capable of performing a specified task in competition with other teams. Skills in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering are developed.

The Faculty is looking for undergraduate and graduate mentors to help high-school students in this year's build season. Over the past three years the program has worked with 13 schools and had over 70 mentors; however, this year we are looking to expand the program and help more high schools. We are looking for a commitment of a couple of hours per week in January and February. Please note that you do NOT need to have a robotics background to help.

If you are interested in joining the UTFIRST Mentorship program please email patricia@mie.utoronto.ca for more information, or sign up on our website.

For those who have experienced the excitement of FIRST in high school: continue the thrill in university, and for those who have not, come discover the energy of FIRST.

Networking » How to Build Relationships that Count
LOT:MIE Event

On Wednesday, October 6, the MIE Leaders of Tomorrow program welcomed motivational guest speaker Colleen Clarke.

Coleen is a workplace coach with over 18 years of career counseling and over 10 years of workplace coaching. She demonstrated to the group the basics of networking: how to make networking a daily part of your life, how to overcome barriers and fears that prevent you from networking effectively, and most importantly, how to build relationships that count.

Thank you to the undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, who participated in this event. Special thanks to MIE:LOT advisor Prof. Michael Gruninger and Estelle Oliva, leadership education specialist for Leaders of Tomorrow, for their support.
