C-MORE and Applied Technology Publications co-organize International Maintenance Excellence Conference (IMEC)
Seated with Prof. Jean Zu are consortium members representing: Ministry of Defence, UK; Teck; ABB; Ontario Clean Water Agency; Ontario Power Generation; Hydro One Networks.
Prof. Andrew J.K. Jardine and his Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering (C-MORE) and Applied Technology Publications co-organized this year’s International Maintenance Excellence Conference (IMEC) held in Toronto, from September 21 to 24. This marked the sixth edition of the annual event which hosted approximately 100 participants from South Africa, USA, Canada, Sweden, UK, the Netherlands, Peru, and Chile.
As always, there was a good blend of academics and asset management professionals. At this international conference, top industry and academic experts present conference themes from two perspectives: professional maintenance practice and maintenance science research. IMEC is structured to encourage dialogue and collaboration between these two communities, enhancing the performance of both.
Canadian companies attending included: AVEOS (formerly Air Canada Technical Services); Ontario Clean Water Agency; IBM; Cetaris; Lanxess; Nova Steel; Hydro One Networks; Barrick Gold; Teck; ValeInco.
Academics were from: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Catholic University of Chile; VPI and State University, USA; University of Pretoria, South Africa; University of Tennessee; University of Toronto.

Robotics and Automation Laboratory
Salil Ghate and Juzhong Zhang of the Robotics and Automation Laboratory have recently completed a preliminary prototype under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Goldenberg, of a Rodent Repellent Mobile Robot, as part of Salil Ghate's MEng project. The robot is aimed at the commercial market (rather than the household market), where the economic losses and/or sanitation issues caused by rodents greatly outweigh the cost of the robot. Deployment areas would include grain storage silos, restaurant and supermarket warehouses, server rooms, cargo ships, etc.
Based on a review of about 50 years of research on mammalian pest control, a repellence strategy that includes a combination of aversive audio and visual stimuli was devised. A fully autonomous, prototype mobile platform that would carry these aversive stimuli as payload, was designed, built, and tested.
The project is still in its early stages and future work on the robot is focussed on implementing smarter strategies for navigation and repellence, and testing within an actual environment with live rodents.
