Chair's Office
Engineering Fall Convocation
Congratulations to the 63 graduate students and 5 undergraduate students will be conferred their degrees tomorrow morning (November 9) at the engineering fall convocation ceremony.
Currently, this year's graduate class is 20% over this time last year, distributed over PhD, MASc and MEng students.

Prof. Jean Zu is away on November 10 - 12 to visit University of Tokyo. During her absence, Prof. Sanjeev Chandra is acting chair.
Awards & Recognition
Prof. Goldenberg awarded Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) Medal for Entrepreneurship
Congratulations to Prof. Andrew Goldenberg for being awarded the 2010 PEO Medal for Entrepreneurship. The medal honours members of the PEO and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) who have made significant contributions to new technologies that have helped new companies get established and grow. Prof. Goldenberg is the president and CEO of
Engineering Services Inc.
Prof. Goldenberg will receive the award at the OPEA Awards Gala on November 20th.

MIE student Samuel Melamed makes James Dyson Award Global shortlist
Samuel Melamed (MIE 1T1+PEY) caught the attention of judges at this year's James Dyson Award, making the international top 20 with his Saguaro Rain Collector invention.
The James Dyson Award, which is now in its fifth year, challenges aspiring design students to present their practical inventions to a panel of international engineers, and James Dyson himself, for a chance at winning £20,000.
Although he did not take home the biggest prize, the Melamed is proud to have made the shortlist, and even more proud that his environmentally-conscious invention is giving much-needed attention to the issue of global water shortage.

Research Activities
Conference Attendance
Prof. Ridha Ben Mrad will be away November 8 - 10 to attend the Industrial Electronics (IEEE) IECO-2010 conference in Phoenix, AZ.
Prof. Ben Mrad will attend the IEEE IE MEMS committee meeting, and will chair a session on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). He is also presenting a paper co-authored by Paul Chiarot, and Prof. Pierre Sullivan.

French Journalists Tour Prof. Nejat's ASB Lab
Prof. Goldie Nejat met with seven French education and science journalists, from Le Figaro to L'Express, who came to tour UofT St. George campus. Organized by the Canadian Embassy and Autodesk, an international software company, the tour was a chance to showcase the diverse research in progress at UofT.

Prof. Goldenberg's Company (ESI) to Develop Canada's new Space Arm Technologies
Company formed by Prof. Andrew Goldenberg, Engineering Services Inc. (ESI), announced that it has signed a $3-million contract with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to develop robotic arm technologies for lunar missions, with an option for a second arm in a contract worth $500,000.

NSERC-JSPS Postdoctoral and Invitation Fellowship Programs
The joint NSERC-JSPS Postdoctoral and Invitation Fellowship Programs provide postdoctoral researchers and university professors or senior scientists with the opportunity to conduct research in the natural sciences or engineering in a university, national laboratory or institute in Japan. The application deadlines for these programs are January 15th, 2011 (Invitation) and January 25th, 2011 (Postdoctoral).

MIE Lectures now Available Online
The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering recently acquired the system entitled Echo 360, that has the ability to capture lectures and make them available for students online.
Since the first week of this term, all lectures have been captured for the course Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines (MIE301F), given by Prof. William L. Cleghorn. This is the first undergraduate course in the Faculty to make use of the Echo 360 system.
The lectures for MIE301F have been captured while being presented live to the students. Soon after the completion of the lectures, the captured content is immediately posted on the course website for the students to review. Lecture material has also been captured outside of the classroom and then presented to the students during the scheduled lecture time period, and it is also available on-line for viewing at the students' convenience.
