New SSHRC policies in Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide

New SSHRC policies in Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide

The three federal research granting agencies are continuing their work to standardize provisions in the Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide (TAFAG). This email is to inform you that the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has decided to standardize three of its policies with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in the “Use of Grant Funds” section of the TAFAG:

- Honoraria for guest lecturers

Under “Other types of eligible compensation-related expenses,” the TAFAG currently indicates that NSERC and CIHR grantees may charge honoraria for guest lecturers to their research grant accounts. SSHRC grantees will now be able to do the same.

- Travel health insurance for research personnel who do not receive any such benefits from their institutions and/or other sources

Under the “Travel and Subsistence Costs” section of the TAFAG, there is currently a provision for NSERC and CIHR grantees to claim as an eligible expense travel health insurance for research personnel not covered by the institutions or by other means. SSHRC grantees will now be able to claim the same expense.

- Relocation costs for research personnel and their immediate family members

Also under the “Travel and Subsistence Costs” section, there is a provision for NSERC and CIHR grantees to claim relocation costs for research personnel and their immediate family members. SSHRC grantees will now be able to claim the same costs if needed to support their research objectives.

Next steps:

These policy changes will be effective as of April 1, 2010, applying to any of these types of expenditures after that date. SSHRC will update the TAFAG hosted on the NSERC website to include the three changes. The TAFAG, hosted on the NSERC website, will be updated to reflect these changes during the annual TAFAG review in mid-September.

[PDADC-L] 80, Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant

PDAD&C#80, 2009-10

To: PDAD&C

From: Cheryl Misak, Vice-President and Provost
Brian Corman, Vice-Provost, Graduate Education and Dean of Graduate Studies

Date: April 22, 2010

Re: Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant

In response to concerns raised by our colleagues and by our graduate students, Brian Corman and I are pleased to announce some substantial revisions to the Doctoral Thesis Completion Grant. This grant will now be used to support PhD students who are in their first year beyond the funded cohort and whose program cannot be completed within the funded years because of special features of the research program, such as intensive language requirements or archival work, or because unforeseen events such as loss of data, obstruction of access of research materials, etc. For 2010-2011, the value of the award is tuition (domestic or international) plus $10,000. This ought to go some distance in alleviating the burdens on international students who require an additional year to complete their theses.

Please see below Doctoral Completion Award Terms of Reference....

Doctoral Completion Award Terms of Reference
Overview and Award Criteria

The Doctoral Completion Award (DCA) is intended to help support PhD students who are in their first year beyond the funded cohort and whose program cannot be completed within the funded years because of special features of the research program, such as intensive language requirements or archival work, or because of unforeseen events such as loss of data, obstruction to access of research materials, etc.

Eligibility
Eligibility is restricted to full‐time PhD students in good standing in their first year beyond the funded cohort.

Nomination Procedure
Application for funding will be made through graduate units who will rank applications before
forwarding to SGS.

Selection Procedure
Application forms will be processed by Student Services, School of Graduate Studies. Awards will be determined by an adjudication committee established by SGS. Awards will be based on program requirements and on academic merit, not on financial need (the grant is not intended to supersede or overlap with the present SGS Emergency Grant). Preference will be given to students with limited access to other internal and external funding sources.

Award Value
The award is intended to provide reasonable support to the student. For 2010‐2011, the award will provide tuition (domestic or international) plus $10,000. The award will be paid in two installments that will be posted to the student’s account and applied first to any outstanding balance. Students must be registered to receive the award and will not receive subsequent payments once degree requirements are completed.

[PDADC-L] 79 Online H1N1 Absence Declarations

PDAD&C# 79, 2009-10

MEMORANDUM

To: PDAD&C

From: Cheryl Regehr, Vice-Provost, Academic Programs

Date: April 22, 2010

Re: Online H1N1 Absence Declarations
___________________________________________________________________________

Last fall, as part of the University's planning related to academic accommodations for H1N1 influenza, the University implemented a temporary suspension of the need for a doctor's note or medical certificate in relation to flu-related absences. As part of these accommodations, an on-line ROSI flu absence declaration system was implemented.

I writing to advise you that, effective the beginning of the summer 2010 session, the on-line H1N1 absence declaration will be disabled. Students who wish to seek academic accommodation for illness will be expected to provide a medical certificate in accordance with their own faculty or campus's normal rules.

Students will receive notification of the suspension for the on-line H1N1 absence declaration. They will be directed to academic divisional registrar's office for further information and responses to their queries.

We are currently examining whether a modified version of an online declaration system may be of use to academic divisions and will be consulting further on this issue.

eBulletin: ASSEMBLING YOUR TEACHING DOSSIER

2010 Workshop SeriesSpring

* Assembling Your Teaching Dossier: Getting Started
Wednesday 5 May 2010, 10:00am-12:00pm
Pamela Gravestock, Associate Director, CTSI
Megan Burnett, Assistant Director, Teaching Assistants' Training Program
Location: Robarts Library, 4th Floor, Room 4049

This session will provide an overview of the content and structure of an effective teaching dossier, with an emphasis on how to align this document with divisional and institutional expectations. Session participants will review the distinctive qualities of a teaching dossier, and will develop a plan for assembling and strengthening their own dossiers. They will also be led through the first steps of composing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy.

At the end of this interactive session, participants will be able to address the following questions:
• What is distinctive about my approach to teaching?
• What have been my major accomplishments as a teacher?
• How can I effectively present my teaching skills and knowledge to a review committee?

* Assembling Your Teaching Dossier: Dossier Clinic
Tuesday 18 May 2010, 10:00am-12:00pm
Megan Burnett, Assistant Director, Teaching Assistants' Training Program
Emily Greenleaf, Faculty Liaison & Research Associate, CTSI
Location: Robarts Library, 4th Floor, Room 4049

NB: The primary mandate of the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation's workshop series is to provide teaching support for current UofT instructors. While we normally welcome graduate students to most of our events, at times due to high demand or a particular workshop focus, we must restrict attendance to current UofT faculty members, CLTAs and sessional instructors. At present, this event is not open to graduate students or PPIT participants.

Building on the overview of teaching dossiers provided in the May 5th workshop, “Getting Started”, this session will give faculty members the chance to “put it all together”. Participants will have the hands-on opportunity to literally assemble their own dossiers and receive feedback on their Statements of Teaching Philosophy.

Working in small groups with input from CTSI facilitators, participants will choose some of the evidence to be included in their dossiers and will review drafts of the Statements of Teaching Philosophy begun in the workshop on May 5th. PLEASE NOTE: While it will be helpful to have attended the May 5th session, participation in that workshop is not necessary to enroll in the May 18th clinic.

Participants in this session are asked to come prepared with the following:
• a draft of a Statement of Teaching Philosophy (maximum length: 1 - 2 pages, single-spaced; minimum length: a short paragraph or a few bullet points; information on how to prepare a Statement of Teaching Philosophy can be found here) - PLEASE BRING 3 COPIES OF YOUR STATEMENT
• representative course syllabi from University of Toronto courses taught in the past (choosing which courses to highlight will be discussed in the May 5th workshop)
- include syllabi for new courses that have been developed, if possible
- include syllabus for a core course that was significantly redeveloped, if possible
• sample teaching materials from University of Toronto courses taught in the past (this may include any sample examinations, tests, quizzes, study handouts, explanatory handouts, visual aids, or assignments prepared for past courses)
• course evaluations

PLEASE NOTE: The teaching dossier clinic is both practical and highly interactive. To ensure that all clinic participants have the opportunity both to provide feedback to colleagues about their dossier materials and to work with their own documents, only registrants who arrive with their own draft materials, as described above, will be invited to participate in the dossier clinic. Please contact CTSI at ctsi.teaching@utoronto.ca if you have any questions about which materials to bring with you to the dossier clinic.

Memorandum

To: Staff, Students and Alumni, Innis College
Principals, Deans, Academic Directors and Chairs

From: Cheryl Misak, Vice-President and Provost

Date: April 14, 2010

Re: Re-appointment of Prof. Janet Paterson as Principal, Innis College

I am pleased to announce the re-appointment of Professor Janet Paterson as Principal of Innis College for a three-year term, beginning July 1, 2010 and ending June 30, 2013.

The overwhelming support for the re-appointment of Professor Paterson is a marker of her outstanding leadership at Innis College. Her commitment to the promotion and strengthening of the student experience and the academic programs of the College has served the Innis community very well. She has done much to promote an excellent working relationship with the Faculty of Arts and Science and to improve the financial base of the College, as well as being a strong spokesperson both within the University and in the broader external community.
