Dear Members and Friends,
At the DX, we bring in the best of international design in our effort to keep Canadians abreast of innovative practices abroad.
We believe that studying and observing others is key to our own professional development. This month, we are pleased to host a new Norwegian exhibit, entitled, 'Constructions'. This exhibition of contemporary Norwegian arts and crafts is based on the concept of "construction" - in the sense of the way something is put together. I have always been a designer fascinated with methods of construction - from mortise and tenon to elaborate stitching and metal welding! Whether for paper or brick, methods of construction challenge us in the process of design and also define our solutions. I hope you join us at the opening of the fascinating exhibit on Friday, November 19th on the first floor of the DX in the Chalmers Design Centre.
Thanks to everyone who supported us and attended the DX Annual Black & White Fundraising Gala. This year was a great success and I enjoyed all of the wonderful surprises that we had for Bruce Mau! Raising funds for youth programs is critical at the DX. If you haven't donated to youth programs, please consider it. Tax receipts are available. If you want to make a donation to honour a friend at the holidays, we can send a beautiful DX card to the recipient. Please contact cindy@dx.org for information regarding this holiday gift program.
As a reminder, the Design Exchange Store is now open and has many unique Canadian designed gifts for the holidays. DX members receive discounts! Today, I purchased a Julie Moon hand glazed ceramic poppy pin. We stock a selection of various types of this pin and they are simply wonderful to wear at this time of year. We can also ship these overnight for our friends across the nation.
Enjoy the wonderful fall here in Canada.

This exhibition of contemporary Norwegian arts and crafts is based on the concept of "construction" - in the sense of the way something is put together. The term is used in many fields, including architecture, engineering and geometry, music and language. In the field of arts and crafts, "construction" is used to describe methods for both building three-dimensional forms and creating patterns in surfaces, or a fusion of these. There are many construction methods, ranging from work on a single object to the joining of different elements.

Drew Mandel Design
Drew Mandel Architects was established in Toronto in 2004. Projects include residences, commercial and residential interiors, landscapes, a small office building, and product design. Ranging from personal objects to city fabric, the design intent is always the development of a place or thing connected to, and reflective of, its context and client. The firm’s built work explores architecture as experience; the unfolding of interconnected spaces, animated by light and material texture. At moments the architecture alternatively creates its own internal landscape and acts as an armature through which to engage the landscape.
Honours include the City of Toronto Urban Design Awards, the Ontario Association of Architects Awards of Excellence and Best of Canada Awards. The office’s work has appeared in numerous national and international publications and exhibitions, including Dwell, Wallpaper*, Toronto Life, Azure, The Globe and Mail, 1000 X Architecture of the Americas, Canadian Interiors and The National Post.
The office is currently involved in designing a number of residential buildings, including a Toronto ravine residence (to be completed in 2010), as well as the restoration, renovation and addition to a heritage house commissioned by Lawren Harris in Toronto in 1930.

This month's pet peeve are Canadian designed clothes that have a super steep price tags that are sewn in cheap labour markets. I understand clothes that are value priced being sewn in countries such as India, China and Honduras, but clothing items that are $500 and up?
