NSERC PromoScience 2012 Competition-Funding Opportunity

PromoScience Program

NSERC's PromoScience program offers financial support for organizations working with young Canadians to promote an understanding of science and engineering (including mathematics and technology).

PromoScience supports hands-on learning experiences for young students and their science teachers. Grants may be used to cover improvements to program content or delivery, as well as for new programs and activities. Grants can also be used to cover operational costs such as salaries, travel, postage, materials and supplies, provided that they relate to the promotion of science and engineering. Please note that grants may not be used to support research or program evaluations.

NSERC will accept only one application per department. Concurrent awards must be held at different departments and applicants must demonstrate that there is no overlap between the activities proposed and those supported by other applications or active awards.

Important Dates

Internal Deadline: September 8, 2011

Sponsor Deadline: September 15, 2011

Value of Funding

NSERC’s contribution is generally up to one-third of a program’s funding. In past competitions, the average grant ranged from $15,000 to $20,000 per year. Organizations may request funds for up to three years at a time.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete an Application Summary Form Application Summary Form, and in addition your submission must include (up to five pages maximum):
• an executive summary of up to 150 words including the nature and goals of the program, the number of youth to be reached and an overview of how the PromoScience funding would be spent; and
• a description of how your proposed program addresses the selection criteria.

The application should be divided into three sections; use the selection criteria as headings and indicators as sub-headings. Requests for core funding must include a detailed description of the organization’s main activities.
If you previously or currently hold PromoScience funding, a one-page activity report (as an additional page) must be provided, and will be reviewed by the Selection Committee in terms of the effective use of past funding and, for renewing applicants, the ongoing effectiveness of the programming.

Applicants should also include:
• Up to five letters of reference; these are highly recommended, as applications without letters of reference may be at a disadvantage in the competition.
• An unlimited number of letters of commitment to confirm funding agreements from the host organization and/or outside sources; please do not include copies of cheques (optional).
• Financial information for the Organization. This information is not counted in the five-page limit and must also conform to the General Presentation Guidelines.

How are Applications Reviewed

Submissions are reviewed by the Selection Committee according to the following selection criteria:
• Excellence of the organization (30 percent)
• Quality of the program (30 percent)
