Chair's Office
Industrial Engineering 50th Anniversary Seminar Series, presented by Canadian Tire
On January 21, the department launched the Industrial Engineering 50th Anniversary Seminar Series, presented by Canadian Tire. The first series speaker was Tridel CIO, Ted Maulucci (MIE 8T9). He addressed the opportunities and challenges of a career in information technology and spoke highly of his experience at UofT and his engineering classmates.

MIE Industry Board
The MIE Industry Board held its first meeting on Monday, January 17. chaired by Prof. Ridha Ben Mrad, members include:
• adjunct professor Eswar Prasad, Chairman of Sensor Technology Limited
• Ted Maulucci (MIE 8T9), CIO at Tridel Corporation
• David Poirier (MIE 9T1), CEO, The Poirier Group
• Cameron Ower, Director, Research and Development for MDA
The board will work to further industrial collaborations with MIE.

Move Scheduled » New Student Service Centre
The move is scheduled as follows:
• Monday, February 7: undergraduate office
• Tuesday, February 8: external relations (RS212A) and copy room
• Wednesday, February 9: reception, purchasing and Joe Baptista
• Thursday, February 10: graduate office
• Friday, February 11: Extra day for the movers to complete anything that was missed
Department members are advised that offices will be closed with some services unavailable on the day of their scheduled move.
Staff are reminded to:
• Notify your closure via newsletter, door signs, phone message and e-mail auto reply.
• Prepare temporary signs ("relocated to" and new space signs).
• Pack as much as possible as it will make the move go much faster.
• Do note move items that are no longer need. Items for recycle, reuse or to be disposed can be left in your current offices.
• Reorganize and declutter

The department has set up a number of general e-mails in order to improve service. Please send your service requests to the following general e-mails for a new team approach to providing you with seamless service. The list also includes the student organizations within MIE.

Awards & Recognition
Prof. Jardine Releases 2nd Edition of Book
Prof. Andrew K.S. Jardine's newest book Asset Management Excellence: Optimizing Equipment Life-Cycle Costs, 2nd Edition, has just been published by CRC Press/Taylor and Frances. The book was written in partnership with the enterprise asset management group of IBM Business Consulting Services.
Co-editors are the late J.D. Campbell and Joel McGlynn, IBM vice president and enterprise asset management global leader for IBM Business Consulting Services.

Research Activities
Upcoming visit by Prof. Kleiner, University of Dortmund, President of the German Research Foundation (DFG)
Prof. Matthias Kleiner is visiting the University on Friday, February 4. He is a materials scientist/production engineer and his main research area is in light weight materials (click here and here for more information). In addition to his talk during the MIE Seminar Series on this day, the department is allocating time for one-on-one meetings (20 minutes each) from 4 to 6 p.m. A dinner is also scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Prof. Mandelis » NSERC-CIHR & SPIE Conference
Prof. Andreas Mandelis will be joining the joint NSERC-CIHR selection panel responsible for evaluating grant applications submitted to the Collaborative Health Research Projects Panel (CHRP) in Ottawa between January 17 and 20.
He will subsequently participate in the SPIE Conference Photonics West, San Francisco, CA, between January 21 and 27. He will present invited and contributed papers and will chair sessions of the Biomedical Optics (BiOS) Conference on Optics in Bone Biology and Diagnostics; he will also chair a
session and present papers in the Conference on Photons and Ultrasound.

MITACS Elevate » Commercialization Fellowships Program (CFP)
Under the MITACS Elevate program, MITACS, in partnership with the Institute of Optical Sciences (IOS) at UofT, is offering a small number of commercialization fellowships for postdoctoral fellows. The expectation is that over a one-year period the postdoctoral fellow will work with the IOS to incorporate a company and commercialize a specific technology (www.optics.utoronto.ca).
Participants in this program will receive customized training in aspects of commercialization and entrepreneurship throughout the year as well as entrepreneurship support through IOS' Business a la Carte service (/www.optics.utoronto.ca/commercialization/).

The 2011 NSERC Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program is currently open for applications. The goal of the SPG program is to increase research and training in targeted areas that will strongly enhance Canada's economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years. The program is intended to increase the participation of Canadian companies and government organizations in academic research and enable the transfer of knowledge, technology and expertise to those organizations.

Job Opportunities
Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, U of T » Postdoc in Fuel Cells for Clean Energy Research
We are seeking a postdoctoral candidate who is a recent engineering or chemistry PhD graduate, to work in the area of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for energy applications. Extensive experience in numerical modeling is required, preferably with knowledge of transport phenomena in porous media and experience in software design principles.
Experience in microfluidics and material characterization are assets. The main roles of the candidate will be i) to develop numerical models involving multiphase flow at the microscale and ii) to design an experimental study for porous media characterization. Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills are required. If approved, funding for up to 2 years will be available, subject to performance. The candidate will be expected to work in an interdisciplinary team, provide input to graduate students, produce publishable results, and publish frequently. The application package (to be emailed to Prof. A. Bazylak at abazylak@mie.utoronto.ca as a single PDF file) should include a cover letter, CV, copy of transcripts, and a list of three professional references.
