RE: Surveys of Undergraduate Students - NSEE and CUR
Beginning this week and over the course of the next several weeks, the University of Toronto along with all Ontario universities will participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) as well as the annual Globe & Mail Canadian University Report (CUR). I am writing to request your cooperation in ensuring we secure the highest response rates possible for these two important institutional surveys of undergraduate students.
Here are the relevant details:
The NSSE survey is administered online; all first year and all senior year students at UTM, UTSC, and the Faculties of Arts & Science, Music, Physical Education & Health and Engineering, as well as all senior year students in the Faculty of Nursing, received an email invitation on Feb. 2 with a link to the survey. Students who do not respond will be sent periodic reminders until March 16th.
This year we have been asked to survey not just a sample but all first year and all senior year students in all divisions so that we can provide faculty, college and program level data. A high response rate on the survey is desirable.
The CUR survey begins in March and includes a 50% sample of second and third year undergraduate students.
To ensure we do not violate the ethics protocol for NSSE and/or bias the response rates, it is important that we control the messaging. Promotion for both surveys will be coordinated centrally by Melinda Scott in the Office of Student Life
Over-surveying students can significantly and negatively affect response rates. For this reason, we ask that you refrain from conducting any surveys of undergraduates for the next few months. If you have an urgent need to survey undergraduates, please write to me directly.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
