RE: CAMPUS-BASED TRAINING SESSIONS FOR NEW HIRES (CUPE 3902 UNIT 1)
As you are aware, the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement requires that all first-time TAs and CIs (if CI is first appointment) be provided with at least 3 hours of paid training in their first appointment.
Many departments will be delivering all or a portion of this training in a group setting. Where this is the case, the Union must be invited one week in advance, and provided with 15 minutes on the agenda to speak with their new members. If the TATP is delivering this session on your behalf, they will ensure the Union is invited.
Note that if your department has not made arrangements for a training session to which the Union has been invited, first-time employees are still entitled to attend an info session with the Union. In this case, first-time employees may attend one of the following University-wide sessions:
ST. GEORGE CAMPUS
Thursday, September 30th, 2010
12:00 – 1:00 pm
Rm. 4049
4th floor, Robarts Library
UTM CAMPUS
Wednesday, September 29th, 2010
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre Boardroom
HMALC, 3359 Mississauga Road North
UTSC CAMPUS
Friday, October 1st, 2010
2:00 – 3:00 pm
Rm. AC 221
Important: If a first-time TA or Course Instructor has more than one appointment in that first year, the collective agreement entitles them to a total of 3 hours of training, and not 3 hours per appointment. Departments have the discretion to exceed the minimum training allocation.
It is imperative that you forward these dates ONLY to those new TAs/CIs in your department who will not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in a session to which the Union is invited. You will note that these sessions are 1 hour in length. This will form part of the 3 hour minimum training requirement.
Sessional Lecturers, Sessional Instructional Assistants and others employed under the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement should NOT be invited to these sessions.
Attendance will be taken at these sessions for payment tracking purposes only and will be sent to you for your records.
