Dr. Jannice Friedman won the 2010 Governor General's Gold Medal award for academic excellence. A recent Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate, Dr. Friedman is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Duke University.

Registration Deadline: September 10
The deadline for fall session registration is September 10. After September 10, enrolment in and access to courses via SWS will be cancelled for students who are not registered. As well, late charges of $44 plus $5 per additional day to a maximum of $94 are applied and registration can only be done in person at SGS. Proof of payment of tuition fees is required.

SGS Calendar 2010-2011
All important sessional dates are in the SGS Calendar and on the Information for Students page of the SGS website. Please take a moment to review these dates to ensure that you are informed.

Health Insurance
The Graduate Students' Union offers supplementary Health & Dental Insurance benefits designed to provide many important services not covered by a basic health care plan such as prescription drugs, health practitioners, medical equipment, travel health coverage and more. If you have equivalent insurance elsewhere you may opt out of the plan, but you must do so within the first few weeks of the term. Visit the GSU website for details.

New and returning degree earning international students are automatically enrolled in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for a twelve month period running from September 1 to August 31 of the academic year. Exchange students will automatically be enrolled in UHIP for the duration that they will be attending the University. Dependents must also enrol within 30 days of their arrival. Contact the international student centre on your campus for details about where to pick up your card.

UTM/UTSC campus affiliation and course union fees
UTM/UTSC campus students are eligible for UTM/UTSC incidental (non-academic) fees. Students in single campus programs at UTSC (M. Env.Sci) or at UTM (MBT, MMI, MMPA, DIFA) do not need to apply. Students who wish to affiliate with UTM or UTSC may do so by completing the UTM/UTSC Campus Affiliation form. Any student who would like to direct their course union fees to the UTM/UTSC departmental course unions may do so by completing this form. September 10 is the deadline to apply for the campus affiliation rebate.

Requesting registration without payment
Students with full funding packages, awards, research stipends or teaching assistantships can make a request to register without payment pending receipt of funding. Contact your department graduate administrator for more information. OSAP and other provincial loan recipients can apply via the Student Web Service for a fees arrangement, pending receipt of funding. After the September 10 registration deadline, requests to register without payment can only be made in person at SGS.

SGS Award Workshops
Workshops are scheduled in September by SGS Graduate Awards for students interested in applying for Federal and Provincial scholarships/ fellowships. Workshops will be held on all three campuses - St. George, Scarborough and Mississauga - and are highly recommended for anyone interested in applying for funding from these programs. Federal programs require that applicants be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Visit the SGS homepage for dates and details.

Award payments by instalment
SGS award payments are made 3 times a year in September, January and May. September award payments (for both internal and external awards) are refunded directly to you. Fees are not deducted from your September award instalment except if you have arrears.

Work-Study Positions go live September 7, 2010
The Work-Study Program provides eligible students with an opportunity to meet financial needs and gain practical experience during the school year. For the 2010-2011 school year there are over 1600 unique job descriptions available for U of T students. These jobs are part-time opportunities, up to 12 hours per week, and allow you to make some extra money, gain career and academic related experience, and work closely with U of T faculty and staff. To view these opportunities login to your Career Centre account after September 7, 2010 and select 'Job Search' from the left-hand menu, then select 'Work-Study'.

Graduate Professional Skills Program Orientation
The Graduate Professional Skills Program is a non-academic program developed by SGS to help doctoral-stream students become fully prepared for their future. GPS focuses on skills beyond those learned within a discipline, skills that may be critical to success both within and outside academe.

GPS Orientation Sessions will be held at Grad Room on Thursday, September 9 - 11:00am - 12:00pm; then again on Friday, September 10 and Monday, September 13, from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. For more information, and to register visit GPS Orientation.

Orientations for women grad students and student parents
The Status of Women Office and SGS are hosting an Orientation for New Women Graduate students on Wednesday, September 15 from 12:00 noon to 1:30pm. Learn more about the transition to graduate school and the programs and services for women graduate students. Space is limited so please RSVP.

The Family Care Office invites incoming and current student parents to an orientation for student parents. Learn about the services and resources available to student parents on campus, get advice from current students on how to adjust to the University, and start creating your support networks now by making new friends and meeting University staff. Thursday, September 9, 12:00 noon to 1:30pm. Registration required.

Wide Open House: September 22
Explore Hart House - a living laboratory of social, cultural, artistic, and recreational activities where all voices, rhythms and traditions converge. Wide Open House is an introductory orientation to Hart House taking place on September 22 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm, followed by a free concert at 8:00pm. Check out the Fall 2010 What's Inside Guide to see everything that Hart House has to offer.

Do you have Aboriginal ancestry?
First Nations House provides a wide range of services and programs which include scholarships, financial aid, events, and academic and cultural supports. First Nations House is a "home away from home" for many Aboriginal students, where you can eat, talk to an Elder, study, visit the library, learn about your culture, relax and socialize. Contact First Nations House today and indicate your program of study to get connected with the appropriate resources and information to make your transition to U of T a smooth one.

New to the St. George Campus? Look for the AskMe ambassadors
During your first couple of weeks on the St. George campus, you may notice staff and faculty wearing badges that say "ASKme" - these are ambassadors that are happy to help you if you get lost or have any questions about the University.

Status of Women Office Mentoring Program
The U of T Status of Women Office has a 26 year history on campus addressing inequities experienced by women at the University and promoting policy development in areas of particular relevance to women, including an exciting mentoring program which is open to all U of T women Ph.D. or Masters students. Visit the Status of Women Office for details.

Office of the University Ombudsperson
The University of Toronto is committed to fairness in its dealings with its individual members and to ensuring that their rights are protected. In support of this commitment, the Office of the Ombudsperson has been offering confidential advice and assistance to students, faculty and staff on all three U of T campuses.

English Language Writing and Support
Registration for September ELWS courses opens Wednesday, September 1 at 10:00am ELWS courses are non-credit, free and available exclusively to U of T graduate students. Students may take a maximum of two courses during the September session. Courses fill quickly so register on September 1 to avoid disappointment.

ELWS will hold an orientation session on Wednesday, September 8. ELWS also offers free workshops in September - no registration required. One-on-one writing consultations resume the week of September 13. Online registration for writing consultations will be accessible after September 3.
