Design Exchange Express: September

Design Exchange Express: September

Dear Members and Friends,

I am excited to announce that our annual gala honoree this year will be Bruce Mau. We have chosen Bruce due to his great body of work for clients including Coca-Cola, MOMA, Chapters Indigo, Arizona State University and many, many others.

Most importantly, Bruce has grown from an innovative graphic designer and visual communications expert to a 'conceptualizer' who believes that design is the key to purpose driven innovation. His publications are provocative and his influence reaches from students and CEOs to government leaders around the world. The recipient of many awards, in 2009, Bruce was honoured at the Creative Leadership Summit, hosted by the Louise Blouin Foundation and the United Nations. Bruce was recognized alongside the assassinated Pakistani President Benazir Bhutto and Finland's Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.

Bruce's work, Massive Change, which explores the legacy and potential, the promise and power of design in improving the welfare of humanity originated as a collaboration between Bruce Mau Design and the Institute without Boundaries located within George Brown College. Massive Change, the book and the exhibit, had an enormous impact on the world of design by showcasing the influences of design across various economies.

Save the date! Saturday, October 23rd, we will celebrate Bruce's achievements at the Design Exchange. I would love to see you here. Stay tuned for more details.

Sam

Ecojot

Ecojot is a brand of paper products for which the paper content is entirely made from old paper – no new trees are cut down in the manufacturing process. Our products include journals, notebooks, sheet wrap, sketchbooks and notecards. Well-known designer Carolyn Gavin designs everything and it’s all made in Canada.

Through our “buy 1, we give 1” we deliver school workbooks to kids in need in countries where parents cannot afford the costs of sending kids to school. So far in 2010 we have sent over 60,000 books to schools in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Cambodia, Israel, Poland, Niger, Haiti and St Lucia.

We have a great new partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute and have produced a range of books featuring imagery of endangered species for which a royalty is donated to the Institute which helps to preserve wildlife and their habitat.

Electrical cords, cords, cords! I can't wait for Nikola Tesla's dream of wireless electricity to be commercialized on a mass scale. Its possible and smaller applications exist, but I anxiously await the future of the large-scale technology.

DX VOLUNTEERS

We are pleased to honour our first "Volunteer of the month" - Elaine Kinyanjui. Elaine is an outstanding volunteer and we recognize her for her hard work, cheerful warm nature and ability to handle whatever projects have come her way! Thanks Elaine

Elaine’s roots may be in Kenya but her aspirations go beyond the notion of borders. She believes that inspiration can be found anywhere and in anything. One just has to be open to it! In that vein, she has taken it upon herself to dabble in a little bit of everything.

From two years in the art and art history program at U of T to a Interior Design Diploma and her current pre-occupation in the Environmental Design program at OCAD, Elaine is just getting started. She may draw, paint and write poetry in her spare time but she is also passionate about human rights issues and by extension politics and culture. She also aims to take on furniture design and architecture in the future.
