Chair's Office

Chair is Away

Jean Zu will be away August 23 - 31 for vacation and to meet with alumni in New York.

During her absence, Prof. Sanjeev Chandra will be acting chair August 23 - 27; Prof. Bussmann will be acting chair August 30 & 31.

Prof. Wallace Elected Vice-Chair Undergraduate Curriculum Committee



Prof. Jim Wallace has been elected vice-chair of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering's Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.



Congratulations to Prof. Wallace as he takes-up this important service to the Faculty.

Changes to the MIE Undergraduate Office

The MIE Undergraduate Office is pleased to announce that Mark Wlodarski joins the office effective today, August 23, to serve as one of our new MIE Undergraduate Assistants.

Mark has a strong background in both customer and student services. Mark is replacing Alex Boissonneau-Lehner who left the department in July 2010 to attend law school.

Office Closure » Labour Day and Summer Hours End

The University and the department will be closed for Labour Day (Monday, September 6). The University and department will re-open on Tuesday, September 7.

The machine shop will close early on Friday, September 3 at 2 pm and department offices will close at 3 pm.

Summer hours conclude September 6. Offices will return to their regular scheduled hours (machine shop will close at 4:30 pm and offices at 5 pm).

Awards & Recognition
Prof. Aleman and Prof. You Awarded Provincial Funding

Pursuing a goal of strengthening Ontario’s prosperity, the provincial government has awarded UofT a total of $6.7 million through the Ontario Research Fund-Research Infrastructure Program (ORF-RI) and the Early Research Awards (ERA).



Ontario Research Fund-Research Infrastructure Program

The government is investing close to $18 million in research infrastructure projects at universities and research hospitals across the province.

Lead researcher: Dr. Dionne Aleman
High performance computing infrastructure for large-scale healthcare optimization
Using mathematical modeling to solve health care problems
Provincial funding: $91,324

Early Researcher Awards

Ontario is providing more than $11 million to support 80 emerging researchers and their teams at 16 institutions across Ontario through the ERA program.

Lead researcher: Dr. Lidan You
Rational mechanobiological-based design of tissue engineered bone
Discovering biomaterials to treat osteoporosis-related fractures by replacing bone
Provincial Funding: lead researchers will receive up to $140,000 through the program.
Number of researchers benefiting: 4

Industrial Engineering student wins at UnERD

Sabrina Tang of Prof. Timothy Chan's lab, gave a talk on Location modeling and analysis to improve cardiac arrest survival rates with automated external defibrillators, which won "best podium presentation" in her section at the Undergraduate Engineering Research Day (UnERD).

Sabrina Tang (1T1 +1) is an undergraduate student supported this summer by the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA).

Research Activities


Prof. Thomson Appointed to NSERC Mechanical Evaluation Group

Prof. Murray J. Thomson has been appointed as a member on the Mechanical Engineering Evaluation Group for a three-year term ending June 30, 2013.

NSERC's success in supporting university research in sciences and engineering depends on the voluntary participation of members of the research community in its peer review process. The process is highly regarded by the research community. Its credibility is linked to the participation of some of the best – and busiest – researchers from all sectors.

NSERC PromoScience Program: Call for Applications

NSERC's PromoScience Program offers financial support for organizations working with young Canadians to promote an understanding of science and engineering (including math and technology). Through PromoScience, NSERC may award up to $2.75 million each year. Organizations may request funds for up to three years at a time.
