MIE Graduate Studies Open House 2011
The second annual MIE Graduate Studies Open House was held March 3 and 4. Lead by Prof. Markus Bussmann, the department hosted a number of exceptional students from across Canada, who applied to pursue graduate work at MIE.
MIE would like to thank all the graduate students who participated in welcoming these students to the department, among them: Pradyumna Challa, Dillon Fuerth, Hadi Ghasemi, James Hinebaugh, Joel Kuhn, Aydin Nabovati, Dan Sellan, Edwin Wang and Jingwen Wang. Students also received a special welcome from Dean Cristina Amon at Friday's luncheon.
Thank you to all the professors who took time to meet with prospective students and introduce them to the research possibilities within MIE.

Dr. Seth Dworkin is postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Murray Thomson's group in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. Along with PhD candidate, Meghdad Saffaripour, Dworkin studies the combustion of biofuels, aiming to make them into clean-burning substitutes for current aviation fuels.
Compute Canada announced its allocations, which connect supercomputing resources to researchers.
Dr. Dworkin commented to Canada NewsWire: "The expertise and computational resources at SciNet are helping us tackle problems of combustion-generated emissions using simulations of unprecedented size and accuracy. We're learning more and more about the formation and nanostructure of atmospheric pollutants and are now able to apply that knowledge to the design of engines and alternative fuels."

MIE Graduate Student Travel Grants
The MIE Graduate Student Travel Grant Program is designed to support the conference-related expenses of MIE graduate students.
Up to 24 travel grants of $750 (max.) will be awarded each year, distributed over three application periods. The MIE graduate student travel grant program is by reimbursement only (an award will be withdrawn if an awardee does not attend the conference.)
Applications for travel between May 1 - August 31 are due by Friday, April 1.

Summer Session Course Enrolment
Summer 2011 course enrollment starts on Monday, March 14.

Course enrollment instruction and supervisor's approval procedure are available online.
For courses that run from May to August:
Friday, May 13: Final date to add a course and to submit a supervisor's course approval to the Graduate Studies Office.
Friday, June 3: Final date to drop a course without academic penalty.
For two week intensive session courses:
Deadline to add a course is the start date of the course.
Deadline to drop a course is 3 days before the lecture end date.

International Exchange Update
Prof. Shaker A. Meguid has recently hosted a delegation from Maizuro National College of Technology, Japan, on behalf of MIE. The delegation, led by Prof. Kouichi Kanayama who is VP and Dean of Academic Affairs, is interested in establishing student and staff exchange with MIE. An umbrella MOU is currently being signed by the Dean to facilitate that exchange. Maizuro National College of Technology is a 5-year program and its graduates are assimilated directly to Japanese industry.
